Pool cartridge filters are similar to air filters that protect automobile carburetors. The cartridge system employs a pleated polyester cloth or other synthetic fabric to trap pool dirt. As the pores of the fabric become clogged with dirt, the cartridge needs to be cleaned or replaced. These filters produce excellent water clarity, as they screen out particles 10 microns and larger.

There are other advantages to the cartridge filter. Cartridge filtration saves significant amounts of water because the filters are cleaned by hand and not backwashed (which wastes water) like other pressure filters. Cartridge filter systems are also very simple to disassemble, analyze, repair, and replace, and most cartridge filtration systems do not even require tools. Cartridge filters require little space, and use fewer valves and plumbing than do more traditional filtration systems.

Cartridge filtration has disadvantages too. Some people complain that cartridge filters are difficult to clean and that new filters are required often. Those who use cartridge filters often have new ones on hand to replace old filters every year or so. The plastic lids, O-rings, and gaskets must be checked and lubricated regularly. The lids should be replaced periodically because the plastic lid covers that hold the cartridge in place have been known to crack.

Cartridge filtration appears to be more popular with spas and hot tubs than with pools, although small residential pools can make good use of this system. Most successful cartridge systems use two sets of cartridge filters - one is used in the filter while the other is being soaked in detergent for its next turn in the filter.
