The Pool Pump

The pump is the center of every pool's circulation system. Centrifugal pumps are used in the pool industry. These pumps are simple, reliable devices that use centrifugal force to throw out water through impeller blades. The key to selecting any pool pump is to mach its pumping capacity with the volume of your pool. An undersized pump will not produce sufficient turnovers (a turnover takes place when the entire volume of water in the pool passes through the filtration system) to filter the water properly, whereas an oversized pump may damage other pool parts by pushing pool water too forcefully through small openings.

Most swimming pools require a turnover every six to eight hours (three to four turns a day.) While in use, hot tubs and spas require a turnover every thirty minutes. Selecting the appropriate pump to maintain proper filtration is essential. Use standard pump curves to determine the best pump for a given pool.
